Kit Kat, which up until 1937 was known as Chocolate Crisp, is a chocolate-covered wafer that has become one of the most influential chocolate bars of all time, according to Time magazine. It has been produced in more than 200 flavours over the years and, in addition to its distinctive four finger-style, is available in other formats. The Kit Kat was developed at the suggestion of a worker at the Rowntree’s factory in the UK who envisaged it as “a chocolate bar that a man could take to work in his pack up”. Kit Kats are now manufactured in 21 countries, and according to its current owner, Nestlé, 650 Kit Kats are consumed worldwide every second. In 2013, Google announced their latest version of their Android mobile operating system would be named Kit Kat. In Japan this year, Kit Kat has opened “Chocolatory” stores, which sell some of the most unusual Kit Kat flavours, including edamame, purple sweet potato, and wasabi. At home, Kit Kat was recently in the news following its failure to trademark the four-finger shape of the bars in the UK. The Kit Kat recipe has also been changed, in line with Nestlé’s aim to reduce the amount of sugar in its confectionery by 10 percent by 2018.
The same slogan first used by Kit Kat in 1955, “Have a break, have a Kit Kat”, is still used today and has become one of the most successful brand slogans in history. UK radio ads for Valentine’s Day 2017 gave humorous ways people could “have a break” from soppy sentimentality, while an online ad earlier in the year urged gamers and YouTubers to choose Kit Kat as their snack, through a real-life recreation of the Crossy Road app game. Nestlé is listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange. Kit Kat bars are produced under licence in the US by The Hershey Company.
