Prudential is a British-based multinational financial services company providing insurance and pension services. It formed in the mid-1800s to provide insurance to a fast-expanding working-class population; today its mission is to help remove uncertainty from life’s big events, giving consumers confidence and freedom to face the future. “The Pru”, as it is known, has more than 6 million life insurance and pension customers in the UK. Its tagline, “Always listening. Always understanding,” is accompanied by the brand’s logo which has featured the face of Prudence, one of the four cardinal virtues who represents a combination of memory, intelligence and foresight, since 1848. Prudential Plc has seen success in international markets, particularly the fast-growing Asian market, and the US. The role of Asia in the company’s fortunes was underlined in 2016 when shares in Prudential took a sharp decline over concerns China would impose new controls over the sale of insurance products by foreign companies. In August this year, Prudential plc announced plans to merge its two UK businesses, Prudential and M&G, to create a single large investment and savings provider.
Community work includes programmes to help young people prepare for work and make the most of new opportunities, and help for older people to live fulfilling, financially secure lives. In 2013, Prudential began its sponsorship of the newly launched three-day cycling festival RideLondon. Prudential plc has a primary listing on London Stock Exchange, and has secondary listings in Hong Kong, New York and Singapore.
