Just Eat is an online food order and delivery service which serves as an intermediary between independent take-out food outlets and customers. The platform provides an easy and secure way for consumers to order and pay for food, then the restaurants involved handle their own deliveries. Just Eat has 87,500 restaurant partners which between them serve over 100 different types of cuisine. It is reported to have handled 30 million UK orders in the first quarter of this year alone. Just Eat built its reputation working with small independent restaurants such as curry houses, but is now moving upmarket, partnering with branded restaurant chains as well. While it began in the UK, it now operates in 13 countries in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. Recent growth in Spain, Italy and Canada has been particularly strong. In June this year, Just Eat launched a campaign called “Put it on a Plate”, urging football fans to order takeaways during the World Cup. The ads have a touch of the bizarre, with one online ad showing the face of footballer John Barnes having his face licked. The brand was a sponsor of the X-Factor last year and ads around the show featured singing chefs and delivery drivers as “unsung superstars”.
