The sole Australian BrandZ fast food brand ranked in our report, with over 390 locations across the country, Hungry Jack’s (HJ) is the exclusive franchise of Burger King Corporation (BK) and its second largest franchise in the world. The brand name itself was owned by BK’s parent company, Pillsbury, as part of its U.S. pancake product line but HJ’s owner, Jack Cowin, decided to use that name because “Burger King” was already trademarked in Australia by a food shop in Adelaide. In the early 1990’s when the trade name became available, Burger King opened its own franchise stores under the Burger King brand name, but eventually recognized the power of Hungry of the Burger King logo. The Hungry Jack’s logo came into existence in 1996 and the slogan “The Burgers Are Better At Hungry Jack’s” differentiated the brand, and its success led to its use for decades. Most recently, the popularity of the brand catapulted it to become the official sponsor for the National Basketball League in 2017. Though HJ’s fast food market share at 10% is dwarfed by McDonald’s (21%), Hungry Jack’s is truly the David vs. Goliath and its iconic Australian success bolstered it into the BrandZ Australia’s top 40.
