Industry: Retail

Year formed: 2004

Zozotown is Japan’s largest fashion e-commerce retailer, selling more than 650,000 items from more than 6,400 unique brands. Zozotown fully launched in 2004, and won fans for its intuitive design and embrace of the latest trends from Tokyo. It has become the first-look destination for shoppers trying to buy coveted brands like United Arrow and APC online. Today, in addition to the mainline Zozotown website, the brand also operates its “WEAR” stoppable magazine and the Zozoused clothing resale platform. The brand has also branched out to launch its in-house label Zozo; however, the customized “Zozosuit” system meant to grow alongside the Zozo label was shelved after a year. The brand continues to dominate the growing fashion e-commerce space in Japan, and maintains a robust suite of B2B technology systems behind the scenes to help it maintain that dominance and profitability. Much of Zozotown’s identity in consumers’ minds is tied to the rock-star personality of founder Yusaku Maezawa, who recently broke the world record for most-retweeted message with a promotion offering followers free money. Going forward, Zozotown wants to continue to innovate in the areas of custom clothing solution and to continue to raise its platform worldwide; it recently announced a partnership with the PGA and debuted a foot-scanning app. Zozo Inc is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
